Healing Does Not Follow a Straight Line
Many survivors believe that healing should look like constant progress.
But healing is not a straight path.
Some days, you may feel strong, hopeful, and in control. Other days, old memories or emotions may return, and it can feel like you are back at the beginning.
This does not mean you are failing. It also does not mean you are going backwards.
Healing often looks like:
- Progress, then pause
- Strength, then struggle
- Peace, then confusion
- Remembering, then forgetting
Triggers such as certain places, sounds, or memories can bring back emotions unexpectedly. This is a normal part of how trauma works.
In Nigeria, there can be pressure to “get over it quickly,” especially from family or community members who may not fully understand trauma.
But healing cannot be rushed.
Every small step matters:
- Choosing to talk to someone
- Setting a boundary
- Allowing yourself to rest
These are all signs of progress.
Give yourself permission to heal at your own pace.
Your journey is valid even when it feels messy.
